Liquid asphalt cement (AC) needs to be stored in heated tanks to remain a liquid. Insulation helps keep the heat in the storage tanks and reduces the energy required to heat the tanks.

There are several grades of asphalt cement or binder, each with its own properties. Different types of asphalt mix designs call for different grades of liquid AC or binder and each of these products needs to be stored separately in a tank farm.
